The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull. If you have persistent jaw pain, this may be a sign that there’s something wrong with the TMJ. Our Grand Haven dentists will be able to help you find TMJ relief to improve quality of life and avoid complications to oral health.
TMJ disorder can be difficult to diagnose, as many of the symptoms can also be symptoms of other conditions.
If you recognize any of the above TMJ symptoms, schedule an appointment with our office as soon as possible. During your appointment, one of our TMJ dentists will examine and feel along your jaw for abnormalities. We’ll also ask you to open and close your mouth so we can examine your bite and listen for clicking sounds that would indicate a TMJ disorder.
Many of our patients find relief with a TMJ mouth guard, which helps hold the jaw in place while you sleep. Some TMJ disorders are caused by grinding teeth at night, which exerts pressure on your jaw and TMJ. Night guards can help eliminate teeth grinding, which alleviates TMJ symptoms for many patients.
Surgery is a last resort if other TMJ pain treatment hasn’t worked. Depending on your unique circumstances, we may refer you to a TMJ specialist.
At Grand Haven Smiles, we’re dedicated to your oral health. If you think you have TMJ, you can ask us about it at your next dental exam. To schedule your appointment with one of our Grand Haven, MI TMJ dentists, give our office a call at (616) 209-4704.
